On this page I’ve collected some of the most important German bike vocabulary to make sure you’re prepared the next time a German invites you out for a Fahrradtour. So grab your Drahtesel, pump up your Reifen, put on your Helm and get out there! Just don’t forget your Fahrradschloss, especially if you’re riding in a city.
der Drahtesel –
‘wire donkey‘
“Ich hol mal meinen Drahtesel aus der Garage!”
“I’ll just go and get my wire donkey out of the garage!”
Your bike may well be a bit rusty, a bit of a boneshaker, but it’s yours. You’ve been through thick and thin together and you’ve managed to not have him stolen in over three years. Literally, it’s your ‘wire donkey’.

to lock your bike (to something)
“Wir können die Fahrräder an diesen Laternenpfahl anschließen.”
“We can lock our bikes to this lamppost.”
It’s very important to lock your bike if you ever hope to see it again, especially in Berlin. You will need a Fahrradschloss and a suitable object to lock your bike to.
